Morocco: Final hearings of defendants accused of murdering Scandinavian tourists presented in court
Seven defendants, the last out of a total of 24 who are being prosecuted for the murder of two Scandinavian tourists in December 2018, appeared in court in Sale, near Rabat, on Thursday.
Footage shows the courthouse and people in attendance in Sale. According to one of the lawyers, Mohammad Wahbi, one of the defendants is a Swiss national who came to Morocco to "embrace Islam."
The trial kicked off on May 17, after being postponed from May 3. The defendants, 23 Moroccans and a Swiss-Spanish convert will stand trial for charges, including promoting terrorism and forming a terrorist cell. It is reported that the three main defendants have already confessed to participating in the execution of the crime.
The victims, Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway, were found decapitated in the High Atlas Mountains in December, in what was Moroccan authorities considered a militant act.
