Russia: Ukraine's leadership need political will to solve Donbass crisis - Putin

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that new Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy's administration needs "political will" to solve the conflict in Donbass and to improve relations with Russia, speaking in his annual 'Direct Line' Q&A session in Moscow on Thursday.

He [Zelenskiy] is a gifted person. I recall his performance at KVN [Club of the Funny and Inventive People] in Moscow in the early 2000s. Everything he said was talented and funny. But what we see now is not funny. This is not comedy, it is tragedy," Putin said of the situation in eastern Ukraine.

In order to ease tensions in Donbass, Putin added that "Reciprocal steps are the simplest thing. A political will is needed from the side of Ukrainian leadership."

During Putin's Q&A session, people across Russia have the opportunity to contact the president via telephone, text message or the dedicated website.

The event-hosting multimedia studio is equipped with video walls along the perimeter that enables Putin to immediately get in contact with regional governors and the cabinet ministers in order to address issues straight away.

So far some two million questions have been submitted for Putin's Direct Line 2019 Q&A.

The first phone-in line with President Putin took place in 2001 when he received around 400,000 questions.
