Russia: Putin discusses sanctions, Trump’s Huawei ban at ‘Direct Line’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the European Union has lost hundreds of billions of euros because of the anti-Russian sanctions, speaking at his annual 'Direct Line' Q&A session in Moscow on Thursday.

The president stated that starting from 2014, the Russian economy has been deprived of $50 billion (€44bln), but the European Union has been hit harder, losing $240 billion (€212bln).

"This has impact on employment in these countries, including EU countries, they are losing our market," he said.

The Russian leader also discussed the recent US ban on Huawei products, saying it is designed to "to hold back Chinese development" since it has become a "global competitor" for the USA.

"It is the same thing regarding Russia and it will be happening in the future. That is why if we want to have a decent place under the sun then we should be getting strong, including and above all in the economic sphere," concluded Putin.

During Q&A session, people across Russia have the opportunity to contact President Putin via telephone, text message or the dedicated website.

The event-hosting multimedia studio is equipped with video walls along the perimeter that enables Putin to immediately get in contact with regional governors and the cabinet ministers in order to address issues straight away.

So far some two million questions have been submitted for Putin's Direct Line 2019 Q&A.

The first phone-in line with President Putin took place in 2001 when he received around 400,000 questions.
