Germany: Berlin supports 'a quick and complete clarification' of cause of Morsi's death

German Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Rainer Breul, said that Berlin supports "a quick and complete clarification of the cause of death" of former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, while speaking at a regular press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

"I can say first that Mohammed Morsi, as the first freely elected President of Egypt, that we are distraught over the death of Morsi and say our condolences to his family and his relatives," Breul stated.

Morsi died on Monday after fainting in a Cairo court while facing trial on espionage charges, the 67-year old was serving a 20-year sentence for a conviction stemming from the killing of protesters during protests in 2012. He was also serving a life sentence on espionage charges.

A medical report reportedly showed no signs of recent injuries on his body but Turkish President, and Morsi ally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has questioned the circumstances of Morsi's demise.

While attending a prayer service for Morsi in Istanbul on Tuesday, Erdogan commented that "I personally do not believe that it is a normal death."

Breul also commented on the ongoing investigations into the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi saying "We still expect from Saudi Arabia a complete and credible solving. That especially applies to the cooperation of Saudi Arabia with the Turkish authorities.''

"An important development is also the criminal trial against the eleven defendants, which continues in Riyadh . We expect full transparency and a constitutional procedure from the Saudi judiciary," he added.

Another government spokesperson, Ulrike Demmer, also shared Berlin's view that the US is not interested in a war with Iran, saying that "there are multiple statements and clues whereas President Trump wants to avoid a military altercation.''

Demmer's statement came in response to a question from a journalist if the German government would support a US attack against Iran.
