Iran: US likely to be behind ‘suspicious’ Gulf of Oman incident - Larijani

The Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Ali Larijani, pointed the finger at the US for the attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, claiming that the US was likely to have orchestrated the attacks as part of a sustained campaign of political pressure on Iran, as he spoke in Tehran on Sunday.

"Suspicious acts in the Sea of Oman against oil tankers seem to be supplementary to the [US] economic sanctions as the Americans gained nothing with the sanctions, especially given US’s historical record in this [carrying out false flag operations],” he said.

He also hit back at US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s remarks encouraging Iran to engage in diplomacy with the US, deriding the comments as “sweet.”

“Is it diplomacy to start a face-off with a revolutionary nation with acts of economic terrorism [economic sanctions], which they themselves call the toughest ever? Mr. Pompeo, is it a political action to violate agreements in the nuclear deal and create an economic war against the Iranian nation?” he asked.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo laid the blame for the attacks on Iran, claiming a US assessment had found that no other proxy group in the area had the ability to perpetrate such an attack. Iran’s rival Saudi Arabia has also claimed Iran was culpable, with Crown Prince bin Salman (MBS) stating that he would not hesitate to take action against any threats to their interests from Iran.
