India: a country of tolerance, spirituality and ancient traditions. This is the image that the Indian tourist board is keen to promote, but another is emerging: an intolerant, right wing nationalism is sweeping the country, bolstered by the ruling BJP's huge win in the recent elections.

redfish explores how the BJP's domination of politics is decades in the making, how their influence has spread to all levels of society, and how they spawned from a party with far-right roots.

Shahdab Ahmad, a resident of Saniarpur, told redfish how Muslims have been targeted by authorities under the BJP government: "Muslims are being framed in… terrorist cases without any proof, by false means. Our BJP government who have been in power for the last 5 years, gave a free pass to all the Hindus who were involved in the terrorist cases."

Sonia, a student activist, explained that the threat of fascism should be taken seriously: "I think right now is a time when one should believe in international solidarity and come together to fight fascism or even hints of it, a lot of attacks and lynchings are happening on the Muslim and the Dalit community."

Achin Vanaik, a writer and social activist, believes that countering the BJP's rise means radically changing India's economic system: "BJP's strength is that they're a transformative project for India - you have to counter with an alternative transformative project which cannot simply be this kind of existing neoliberal capitalism..."
