Russia: Journalist Golunov thanks supporters after drug related charges dropped
Investigative journalist Ivan Golunov expressed his gratitude to his supporters after authorities dropped the case against him, speaking outside the Russian Interior Ministry in Moscow, Tuesday.
“Thank you very much all of you, who supported me”, said Golunov. He went on saying that the case put even more pressure on his investigative work: “If before I was nervous before publishing my investigation not to make mistakes, now I need to check everything even more,” he added.
The Meduza journalist was arrested on 6 June on charges of drug trafficking. Police alleged that he was found carrying four grams of methamphetamine in his rucksack and he was charged with drug dealing.
Golunov received an outcry of support from Russian media and celebrities who claimed the charges were trumped up in retaliation for his work.
