Russia: Lavrov and Colombian FM Trujillo discuss crisis in Venezuela

Russian Federation, Moscow
June 3, 2019 at 11:50 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is categorically against interference in the internal affairs of other governments, referring to the crises in Venezuela and Syria. He was speaking at a press conference with his Colombian counterpart Carlos Holmes Trujillo in Moscow on Monday.

“We have repeatedly categorically opposed the use of force, and indeed any forms of interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela or any other country. The conflict cannot be resolved by such threats. Threats of this kind antagonise society and, in general, create the illusion of the opposition that it can come to power on other people's bayonets illegally,” Lavrov said.

“We cannot support it and we will not support it,” he added.

Trujillo also stated that “Colombia's position is clearly defined in the framework we agreed in the Lima Group, which is to support the itinerary that was put in place by Guaido and the other forces that have been working democratically in favour of that change, that is, the end of the usurpation, the transition and the calling of new elections.”

“With respect to the dialogue with Venezuela, we recognise the legitimacy of Juan Guaido. Our dialogue with Venezuela started through the diplomatic representative of Guaido in Colombia, the Ambassador Humberto Calderon Berti, and of course, we have a permanent dialogue with this Government, which for Colombia is the legitimate Government,” Colombian FM added.

During Trujillo’s visit to Russia, he will also participate in a meeting of the intergovernmental Russian-Colombian commission and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
