Canada: Trudeau hosts Pence in Ottawa for free trade talks
On his first official visit to Canada, US Vice-President Mike Pence said on Thursday in Ottawa that he hopes to have the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) ratified this summer.
"The Prime-Minister and I discussed the whole process of ratification, here in Canada and in the United States, and I assured him that the President and I are absolutely determined to work with rank and file in the Congress and the leadership to move the USMCA forward and to move it forward this summer," said Pence.
The USMCA will replace the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which had been heavily criticised by Trump in the past. Pence declared that "in every respect, the USMCA is an improvement on NAFTA."
Touching on the anti-abortion wave that has hit the US recently, Trudeau expressed concerns with the "new anti-choice laws being passed" and highlighted that "Canadians and indeed this government will always be a staunch defender of women's rights and a woman's right to choose."
In response, Pence said he was "proud to be part of a pro-life administration, and our administration has taken steps to stand for the sanctity of life at home and abroad. "
