Austria: Kurz makes final stand in debate ahead of no-confidence vote

Austria, Vienna
May 27, 2019 at 15:02 GMT +00:00 · Published

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and his government made their final arguments during a special parliamentary session in Vienna on Monday, ahead of a no-confidence vote.

Kurz said that the transitional government has already started working and decided on three goals, one of them being the “full clarification of all current allegations,” following the so-called Ibiza scandal involving his former Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache.

Concerning the no-confidence motion, he added that “members of parliament are thinking about their own interests within the party and in the elections as well vengeful wishes, rather than the common good on a national level.”

Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) member Pamela Rendi-Wagner addressed Chancellor Kurz and said “you are responsible for your cabinet and their actions. Despite of the warnings, you built this coalition and that is why you are also responsible for the failure of your coalition and you are responsible for the current situation."

The no-confidence vote was called by parties on the left of the political spectrum and backed by the Freedom Party (FPO), Kurz’s former coalition partner.

The Austrian Chancellor lost the said confidence vote. It is the Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen who will choose his replacement.
