Germany: EPP's Weber says he won't work with extremist anti-EU parties

European Peoples' Party leader Manfred Weber ruled out any cooperation with right or left-wing anti-EU parties in the European Parliament, at a press conference alongside Christian Social Union leader Markus Soder in Munich on Monday.

"We at the People’s Party stand for stability and therefore, we reject any cooperation with right- and left-wing extreme parties that are against Europe and do not support the European Parliament," said Weber.

He added that "We have stopped the march of the right populists and nationalists in Europe; however, we cannot overlook the fact that the political center became weaker at this European Elections. Therefore, those, who want stability and to go a step further to present an ambitious program, like I do, need to search for a consensus in the constellation derived from the results of the European Elections."

Weber also stated that no one should be considered for the role of EU Commission President by the European Council, unless they had already been announced as a candidate prior the election.

"It is already clear that there will be no support of the majority at the European Parliament for any candidate that has not been a leading one, has not introduced himself and his program to the people before the elections, and, therefore, has not practiced the basic principle of democracy. I hope the European Council will do the same."

Soder attacked right-wing populist movements throughout Europe saying that "All over Europe, they tend to put themselves over the state and the law. They believe that they can treat the state as their property, like in case of party financing and similar."The Bavarian politician also voiced his view on the issues with the ruling GROKO coalition."I believe that the basic problem at the GROKO Coalition is these back and forth discussions with the SPD. Just within the last couple of weeks there were discussions regarding fundamental rights, tax increase and similar, while the government has agreed on something different, like tax decrease. What should citizens think about that?"
