Japan: 'Still more savings to be obtained' from Tokyo 2020 budget says top IOC official

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo 2020 organising committee started a three-day summit in Japan's capital on Tuesday, to check preparations and discuss additional budget cuts ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission John Coates praised the budget cuts already made, but said that there was still room for additional savings.

"You know that on the construction infrastructure budget we've saved, together, and with the cooperation of the International Federation, 2.2 billion dollars and circa another 2 billion dollars from the operational budget. We think that there's still more savings to be obtained in the overlay in some other areas. The Olympic overlay budget was originally 2.1 billion", Coates said.

The IOC top official said that cuts would spare Tokyo and Japan's taxpayers from meeting any of the operational costs linked to the Games. The overlay budget is intended to provide funding for seating, security barriers and other similarly temporary facilities.

In December 2018 Tokyo organizing committee unveiled a budget estimate of 12 billion dollars, with the costs ramped up by an additional 7.2 billion for projects related to the games, as Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike confirmed.

Additional anti-heat measures to tackle the expected hot season in Tokyo offset the savings, leaving some sports federations to worry about possible cuts in accommodation, transports and venues.

On Tuesday it was also confirmed that IOC President Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are set to attend an event marking the one-year countdown next July.
