Berlin Zoo's polar bear family enjoys Mother's Day treats
Zookeepers at Berlin's Tierpark prepared a special 'Mother's Day' surprise treat for the zoo's polar bear mother Tonja and her young cub Hertha on Sunday.
The 9-year-old Tonja and her playful cub Hertha rushed to enjoy the sauerkraut, apples and carrots which had been attached to a tree for them.
Hertha, who was born last December, is the first of Tonja's cubs to make it past the initial three-month mark when the cubs' mortality is at its highest.
Hertha, who was named as part of a sponsorship deal with local German Bundesliga club Hertha BSC, could well become the German capital's next furry celebrity just like the zoo's previous young polar bear Knut, who made the cover of Vanity Fair before his sudden death in 2011.
