Panama: Electoral Tribunal declares Cortizo winner after tight presidential race
Laurentino Cortizo, the presidential candidate from the Democratic Revolutionary Party addressed his supporters in Panama City on Monday after being declared the winner by the country's Electoral Tribunal.
"When this little country filled with good people unites we will achieve great things, we have a historic opportunity. There's a lot to be done," said Cortizo to the cheering crowd at a Panama City hotel.
Opposition candidate Cortizo secured his win with 33 percent of the vote, being just a few percentage points ahead of his main rival Romulo Roux, from former President Ricardo Martinelli’s Democratic Change party.
Cortizo is expected to focus on eliminating corruption and a fair distribution of public funds.
