Bulgaria: Pope calls for ‘revolution of charity’ at open-air mass in Sofia
Pope Francis called for a ‘revolution of charity’ while addressing 12,000 people at an open-air mass celebrated on Sunday on Sofia’s Battenberg Square. Speaking of God’s love, the Pope urged the country’s minority Catholic community to serve the neediest.
“A love that inspires and directs us to strive for the common good. This love enables us to serve the poor and to become protagonists of the revolution of charity and service, capable of resisting the pathologies of consumerism and superficial individualism," said the Pope at his homily.
There are an estimated 58,000 Catholics in Bulgaria, representing less than one percent of the country’s population of seven million.
Orthodox leaders reportedly declined to join the Pope in joint religious ceremonies.
Pope Francis arrived in Sofia on Sunday for a three-day visit to Bulgaria and North Macedonia. He is expected to visit a refugee centre on Monday.
