State of Palestine: Italian trainee doctor becomes first-ever Erasmus student in Gaza

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Gaza Strip

A sixth-year medical student from Italy, Riccardo Corradini, has become the first Erasmus exchange student to study in Gaza, where he is focusing on emergency surgery at Gaza’s Islamic University.

Footage filmed at a Gaza hospital on Saturday shows Riccardo doing the rounds and speaking with patients under the supervision of doctors, and alongside local students.

The 25-year-old medical student from Siena University explained that he wants "to specialise in emergency surgery, and so, here unfortunately there are many casualties which I can study and see with my own eyes how it works."

According to Riccardo, "culture and university can help" as a "peaceful way" to solve the problems Gaza is facing.

Currently in his sixth year of medical studies, Riccardo had already studied in the occupied West Bank two years earlier but getting to the Gaza Strip, which has been under blockade by Israeli forces for over 12 years, was a bit more complicated.

"I didn’t find many difficulties, I had of course, some problems with [the] visa, but in the end, I would not say it’s difficult to come here if you’re part of this programme," Riccardo said.

Despite Gaza’s more "chaotic" lifestyle, Riccardo says that life there is pleasant and that its people are friendly.

The Gaza Strip has been under land, air and sea blockade by Israeli forces since 2007, after Hamas took control of the area during the Battle of Gaza.
