Venezuela: Maduro hails 'terrifying defeat' of Guaido's 'coup attempt'
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro spoke at a May Day rally on Wednesday in Caracas where he said that the uprising called by Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido had been defeated.
Guaido has repeatedly called for an uprising which he has dubbed 'Operation Freedom' and on Tuesday morning released a video calling for a military and popular revolt.
However, according to Maduro "They [the opposition] have entered into what is called a pot of lies, a pot of intrigue, which they intended to throw against us, and has returned against them in a terrifying defeat of the coup attempt. We have returned to triumph. With truth, with loyalty, with honour."
Maduro also announced a "great national day of dialogue, of action and proposals" to take place soon with the aim of helping his government to create a plan to "to improve everything, to rectify mistakes."
Venezuela has been in a political crisis since January 23, when Guaido declared himself interim president in a move now recognised by over 50 countries including the United States as well as the European Union.
