Russia: Lavrov slams planned increase in US troops in Poland

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that a planned increase in the number of US soldiers in Poland would be a violation of the fundamental Russia-NATO act. He made the comment during a press conference with his Cape Verdean counterpart Luis Filipe Tavares in Moscow on Tuesday.

“This reflects the United States policy of scrapping all the security arrangements that existed in the Euro-Atlantic region,” Lavrov said

“It is about undermining one of the key provisions of the act between Russia and NATO, according to which substantial combat forces in the territory of the new members of NATO are not permanently stationed,” he added.

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak announced during a televised speech on Monday that Warsaw and Washington had decided to increase the US military presence in the country.

Lavrov also said that the Russian Federation expects a positive outcome of an investigation into Russian sailors suspected of smuggling cocaine detained in Cape Verde.

“Assurances were given that the investigation would be objective. We expect a positive outcome soon,” the Russian minister said.

“I assure you that justice will prevail. If justice is carried out correctly, then the verdict and the sentence will be fair. We will work in full compliance with international law in this case,” Tavares said.
