Mexico: AMLO launches new capital city airport project
:
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) symbolically kicked off construction efforts for a new airport intended to serve the Mexican capital, in Santa Lucia, north of Mexico City, on Monday.
"The new airport is a fundamental project because it will solve the problem of the saturation of the current airport in Mexico City, but also to be an example of how you can carry out a rational, austere policy, within the framework of honesty that needs to be established as a way of life and as a form of government in our country," the president stated.
AMLO cancelled plans by the previous administration of President Enrique Pena Nieto to build a new $13 (€11.6) billion airport on the Texcoco lakebed northeast of the capital city, in January.
The new plans envision the expansion of the existing Santa Lucia Air Force Base to include a civilian airport with two new runways.
The new airport is to be named after Mexican revolutionary war general Felipe Angeles and the project is intended to be significantly cheaper than that which was cancelled.
