Belgium: Brussels hopes that Spain can form a ‘stable and pro-European government’

The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, will congratulate Pedro Sánchez on the "clear" victory of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the general elections held on Sunday and hopes that Sanchez can "form a stable and pro-European government that will allow Spain to continue playing an important role in the EU."

This was confirmed at a press conference by the European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas in Brussels on Monday.

"The results of the elections in Spain show that the vast majority of the Spanish people have opted for clearly pro-European political parties," stressed the spokesman, when asked about the far-right party Vox, which won 24 seats in the Congress of Deputies, marking the first time that a far-right party has entered the national parliament since the return of democracy.

The PSOE, led by current president Pedro Sanchez, won the elections in Spain, taking 123 seats. The Popular Party (PP) became the second largest political force with 66 deputies, the worst electoral result in the history of the party.

They are followed by Citizens (Ciudadanos) with 57 seats, United We Can (Podemos) and their allies, who obtained 43, and Vox, who enters the national parliament for the first time with 24 seats.

Sanchez will now seek coalition partners among the rest of the political parties to form a government in the coming days.
