Spain: Madrid left divided after socialist surge and far-right rise

The results of the Spanish general election split opinion in Madrid following the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) gains and the growth of the far-right Vox, as shown on footage from Monday.

“I think that as soon as Vox came out, the right said ‘An even more aggressive party that will take rights from other people just because they feel like it, great!’ and they went all for it," said resident Cecilia.

“I think [Vox] is even worse than PP [Popular Party], so the radicals showed up and it turns out there are way more than I thought,” she added.

Other residents were concerned by the failing of the centre-right, with one resident placing the blame on former prime minister Mariano Rajoy.

"Rajoy has been a person that has not taken care of the party, he has done very unwise things," said Guillermo.

Another was worried about the vacuum left by PP's collapse.

"Because in this country if there is no right-wing, it does not work, because of this people. How will we pay the pensions if there are no jobs?" asked Raul.

The PSOE, led by incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has won the elections in Spain with 123 seats. The Popular Party (PP) becomes the second largest political force with 66 deputies, which is the worst election result for the party in its history.

They are followed by Ciudadanos with 57 seats, Unidas Podemos and their allies, who got 43, and Vox, who enter the national parliament for the first time, with 24 seats.

Sanchez will now look for coalition partners among the rest of the political parties in order to form a government in the coming days.
