Venezuela: Chavistas celebrate split with OAS
The government staged a rally to celebrate its split with the Organization of America States (OAS), in Caracas on Saturday.
Supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez, known colloquially as Chavistas, marched through the city centre towards the headquarters of the Chancellery.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said the departure was due to "the will of the sovereign people of Venezuela", to cheers from the crowd.
The 35-member OAS voted earlier this month to recognise an envoy selected by opposition leader Juan Guaido. A minority of countries opposed the resolution.
Maduro had already started a two-year process to abandon the OAS in 2017, after the US-based regional body held a meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the 'Venezuelan crisis'.
