Dozens of CodePink and Popular Resistance activists continued to occupy the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington DC on Thursday, as they attempt to stop the US government handing the building over to Venezuelan opposition leaders.

Embassy staff were ordered to vacate the property with the deadline passing on Wednesday night.

According to the organisers, they have been threatened with arrests if they fail to comply and vacate the property.

However, Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a lawyer from the Partnership for Civil Justice, said: "They are here lawfully in that process and in the District Of Columbia there are strong laws protecting people who have tenancy in a property."
