Russia: North Korea needs ‘guarantees of security and sovereignty’ in exchange for denuclearisation – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a press conference in Vladivostok on Thursday after finishing his first ever summit with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.

"Chairman Kim Jong-un is a fairly open person, leading a free discussion on all issues that were on the agenda and on bilateral relations," Putin said.

The Russian leader added that Kim had asked him to inform the US administration on the Vladivostok talks.

"Chairman Kim Jong-un himself asked us to inform the American side about their position, about the issues that arise in connection with the processes that are occurring on the Korean Peninsula, and with everything that happens around it," said Putin.

The Russian president emphasised that Moscow supports full denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, but added that North Korea needs "guarantees of security and preservation of sovereignty."

Putin also said he did not see anything unusual in the introduction of a simplified procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship to the residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.

"I do not see anything unusual here. Moreover, when other countries, neighbours of Ukraine have been doing this for years, why Russia cannot do that?" Putin noted.
