USA: Thousands protest in front of Turkish consulate on Armenian Genocide anniversary

United States, Los Angeles
April 25, 2019 at 02:11 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of people gathered in front of the Turkish consulate in Los Angeles on Wednesay, marking the 104th anniversary of the Armenian massacre.

People held Armenian flags, chanted 'Get your hands out of our land', 'We want justice', holding banners reading 'Shame on Turkey' and 'Turkey failed'.

Mahran Khatchadorian, a member of the Armenian Genocide Committee said that the main demand is for the genocide to be recognised.

"I definitely want for the United States and Turkey to both recognise and for every country in the world to recognise and to be just as recognised as the Holocaust and the Rwanda genocide, because these atrocities did happened and if no one recognises it everyone will forget it," said another protester, Angelique Alexander.

The Armenian Genocide took place in the Ottoman Empire during and after World War I, between the year 1915 and 1923. Commemorations have taken place every year on April 24 since the 1920s, marking the date in 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were arrested in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, before being executed. In the years that followed ethnic Armenians were displaced, deported or placed in concentration camps by Ottoman authorities. Between 600,000 and 1.8 million people are believed to have died during the period.
