Hundreds of people, including Druze men, rallied in the Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams on Wednesday, as Syria marked the 73rd anniversary of Syria's Independence Day also known as Evacuation Day.

The demonstrators denounced US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied territory. "The Golan Heights are not a property of Trump to make decisions to give this land away to others," said one of them.

Participants of the rally also expressed confidence that Israel's occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, a territory the Israeli state captured from Syria in 1967, would end soon.

"The days of liberation are coming, the occupants will be forced our of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine as well. This day is for all Syrians with all its greatness, the Great Syria is for all Syrians," stated a local.

On Evacuation Day, Syria commemorates the evacuation of the last French soldier, representing the end of the French mandate in Syria and the country's proclamation of full independence on 17 April 1946.
