Switzerland: UN says Assange must have fair trial

Switzerland, Geneva
April 12, 2019 at 17:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

A UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson called for the right to a fair trial of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be upheld, in a statement delivered in Geneva on Friday.

“From the OHCHR’s side, what I can say is that we expect all relevant authorities to ensure that Mr. Assange’s right to a fair trial is upheld by the authorities, including any extradition procedures that may take place," Ravina Shamdasani said.

Questioned whether the UNOHCHR was being deliberately silent on the matter, she said: "No, no, certainly, you know Ms. Bachelet and you know our office, we don’t hold back when we feel our voice can make a difference."

Whistleblower Julian Assange has reportedly been held at Belmarsh prison in the south-east of London since Thursday. The WikiLeaks founder was removed from the Ecuadorian embassy the same day, bringing to an end both his seven-year long stay in the building and his asylum status.

Assange, who was found guilty of breaching his bail at Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday, is facing up to a possible 12 months in jail when he is sentenced at the Crown Court as well as possible extradition to the US to face charges of whistleblowing.
