USA: OAS votes to recognise Guaido envoy as Venezuela's representative

United States, Washington DC
April 10, 2019 at 05:11 GMT -00:00 · Published

The Permanent Council of the Organisation of American States' (OAS) voted to recognise Venezuelan opposition leader, and self-declared interim president, Juan Guaido's envoy as Venezuela's official representative to the organisation, in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.

Jamaica's Deputy Representative Deon L. Williams said that the OAS Permanent Council accepted Gustavo Tarre's appointment "as the National Assembly's designated representative, pending new elections and the appointment of a democratically elected government."

The resolution was adopted by 18 votes voting in favour, nine against and six abstentions.

Tarre was appointed by Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido, who in January declared himself the country's interim president.

The government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced it's intention to leave OAS in April 2017, amid claims of the body being biased towards US interests, and Venezuela is set to formally leave the organisation on April 27 2019.
