      Algeria: Thousands gather in Algiers as parliament names interim leader

      Thousands of protesters gathered in Algiers on Tuesday, as the Algerian parliament named an interim leader to replace former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned last week after a series of anti-government protests.

      Demonstrators gathered to demand an end to the "system," or "Le Pouvoir," according to reports.

      Footage shows protesters scuffling with police in the Algerian capital.

      On Tuesday, Algeria's parliament appointed Abdelkader Bensalah as the country's interim leader for the next 90 days.

      Bouteflika resigned after weeks of mass protests which started on February 22, following his bid to seek a fifth term in the presidential elections.
