The world’s biggest trade show for health and wellness kicked off in Cologne on Thursday, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors interested in the future of fitness.

The FIBO exhibition features over 1,000 exhibitors from around the world and draws in over 143,000 visitors each year in a showcase of technological and scientific innovations ranging from the realms of exercise and health to beauty and fashion.

Among them is the ‘Power Plate’ - a vibrating platform that promises an effective whole-body workout in just ten minutes with a range of health benefits, from improved circulation to pain reduction.

Power Plate representative Sylvie Patrick explained: “It's actually a vibrating platform and that vibration is going to engage my muscle [corresponding] just with my body weight. I'm going to be working harder with just my body weight, no impact. Very safe and very effective to get great definition in your muscle without bulking.”

And for those working out too hard, Managing Director of US company Cardiac Science Carsten Roth demonstrated a defibrillator that uses voice prompts, a text screen and dual-language capability to help inexperienced users operate the device.

Roth explained that the device, which can even administer shocks automatically if it detects one is needed, was designed with inexperienced users in mind.

“If you have a sudden cardiac arrest in the street, in the fitness centre, in your private home, you can check the defibrillator and use it at all times, even though you are a private or layperson, you can use the product," he said.

The exhibition runs from Thursday, April 4 -Sunday, April 7.
