Israel: Netanyahu praises soldier’s ‘Zionist zeal’ as remains return to Israel after 37 years
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the remains of missing soldier Sgt. Zachary Baumel were repatriated to Israel while speaking to the press in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
"Zachary's remains that were brought to Israel have been identified with certainty. As well as his remains, his overalls, his tzitzit. Zachary will be brought to his final resting place in Israel soon," Netanyahu said.
Baumel, who went missing in action 37 years ago, fell during the Battle of Sultan Yacoub in the 1982 Lebanon War. His remains were identified by his DNA at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute of Tel Aviv.
The Prime Minister recalled meeting Baumel's father many times, saying his biggest wish was to find his son before passing away.
The battle of Sultan Yacoub, which took place between the Israeli Defense Forces and the Syrian army on the sixth day of the Lebanon war, ended with twenty dead and over thirty injured.
