Venezuela: Guaido stripped of immunity
Venezuelan politicians voted to strip opposition leader Juan Guaido of immunity from prosecution on Tuesday.
Head of the Constituent Assembly Diosdado Cabello announced the result to lawmakers. The legislative body, which sits in Caracas, is loyal to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The move opens a way for the government to prosecute and potentially arrest Guaido, who supposedly violated the constitution when he declared himself interim president.
The assembly met a day after Supreme Court Justice Maikel Moreno asked politicians to strip Guaido's immunity for violating a travel ban when he went on a tour of Latin American nations that support a change in Venezuela's government.
The constitution guarantees immunity for elected officials.
