Thousands took to the streets of Algiers on Tuesday to celebrate the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, after weeks of mass protests.

Draped in Algerian flags, protesters, mainly young people, sang and sounded car horns to mark the end of Bouteflika 20 years in power.

The 82-year-old president, who was rarely seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, announced his resignation on Tuesday after the army chief called for his to be declared incapable of carrying out his duties.

The protest movement started last February, when Bouteflika announced his intention to run for fifth term.
