UN: Angelina Jolie calls for more women in UN peacekeeping missions
Actress and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) special envoy Angelina Jolie called for an increase in the number of women in UN peacekeeping missions, during a keynote addressed to the UN Defence Peacekeeping Ministerial in New York City on Friday.
Jolie began her speech asking UN officials "to take time to consider the question from the perspective of women." "They are over half of all refugees, and the vast majority of the victims of rape and other sexual and gender-based violence," Joile said.
Jolie highlighted the importance of giving women representation in peace negotiations or in government, saying "women are already contributing to peace in theatres of war across the world without recognition or glory, because it comes naturally to them. It's important to them."
"Think how much more we could achieve with women's equal participation in all aspects of society: not at the expense of men, but alongside men," Jolie said.
