USA: Monsanto's third Roundup cancer trial kicks off in Oakland
Opening statements on the case Pilliod Vs. Monsanto began at the Alameda Superior Courthouse in Oakland on Thursday, with plaintiffs Alva and Alberta Pilliod saying that exposure to Monsanto's Roundup herbicide caused their non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Both sides presented their initial statements in a case that sets the elderly Pilliod couple, both affected by the disease, against the company Monsanto, responsible for the production of the herbicide.
"He [the lead counsel] laid out the science and showed the animal studies, the human studies, virtually all the studies that had been done in there, dozens of them, and a link in association between non-Hodkings Lymphoma and exposure to Roundup," said Robert F. Kennedy, one of the Pilliod's attorneys.
The trial is the third of more than 11,200 Roundup lawsuits reportedly expected to go to trial in the United States.
On Thursday, a federal jury awarded US$80 million (€71 million) to a California man after ruling that Roundup was a considerable factor in developing his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
A verdict reached in a Californian court in August last year saw Monsanto being ordered to pay $289 million (€253 million) - which was later reduced to US$78.6 million (€69 million) - to a 46-year-old man who developed terminal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
