Algeria: Protests continue as Army Chief declares Bouteflika unfit to rule
Protests against Algeria's ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika entered its fifth consecutive week in Algiers on Wednesday, as Army Chief General Ahmed Gaid Salah declared the president unfit for office.
While most Algerians have reportedly welcomed the declaration, the reaction from the protesters, mostly consisting of university professors and teachers, was not optimistic.
"We feel that it is too late to activate it and the constitution doesn't have any credibility anymore," said a protester referring to Gaid Salah's televised announcement demanding it was time to trigger a constitutional process to remove the president.
"We are against Gaid Salah, they all should leave, we need to restore Algeria, we need a democratic, dignified and a prosperous Algeria with people's voice," another protester added.
According to article 102 of Algeria's constitution, the president could be ruled unfit for the office if he is too ill to carry out his functions.
