Russia: ‘It is hard to find a black cat in a dark room’ – Peskov on Mueller's report
Press Secretary for President of Russia Dmitri Peskov quoted Chinese philosopher Confucius while commenting on the results on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government during the 2016 US presidential elections.
“It is hard to find a black cat in a dark room, especially if it is not there,” he said during the conference call from Moscow on Monday. “Centuries are passing, unfortunately, they do not understand this across the ocean. This is all I can say on this,” Peskov added.
“Our country did not meddle in the domestic affairs of other countries, including the USA, or in electoral processes and we are strongly against any interference by other countries in our country,” he reiterated.
He concluded by saying that Russia is not the cause of the deterioration of relations between the two countries.
The Muller inquiry did not find any US person or Trump campaign official conspired or knowingly coordinated with Russia.
Mueller did not draw a conclusion on whether the US President committed obstruction of justice, but Attorney General William Barr said in a letter to Congress that Mueller's report does not exonerate him.
Despite that, Trump claimed "complete exoneration," characterising the process as "an illegal take down that failed. And hopefully, somebody is going to be looking at the other side. So it's complete exoneration, no collusion, no obstruction."
The report was the culmination of a two-year long investigation by Mueller that has seen a number of Trump aides prosecuted and imprisoned.
