Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced plans to create new jobs in Turkey, while speaking at a Justice and Development (AK) Party rally on Sunday in Istanbul.

The Turkish leader said a new technology development facility will be established in the capital, worth 3.5 billion Turkish liras ($592 million) and creating around 20,000 new jobs.

The rally in Yenikapi Square drew about 1.6 million cheering supporters, according to official figures.

The event was headlined by Erdogan, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli and Binali Yildirim, AKP's Istanbul mayoral candidate.

Turkey will hold local elections on March 31, with twelve political parties set to compete at the polls.
