Italy: New Democratic Party Sec slams Salvini for government's 'darkness'
The centre-left Democratic Party officially appointed its new secretary Nicola Zingaretti during its national assembly in Rome on Sunday.
Zingaretti, two time regional president of Lazio, won the party primaries on March 3rd with a huge 65 per cent.
During his inaugural speech, Zingaretti criticised the populist government of Giuseppe Conte, saying: "Conflict is increasing because [Matteo] Salvini's right-wing is colonising its ally and it is imprinting its darkness on the general message that this government is sending to Italians."
Zingaretti also set the party agenda for the upcoming European elections, calling for an alliance of "other parties of other European countries that, even if different from us, share the same need for a pro-European commitment."
