China: Authorities unsure when Boeing 737 8 MAX ban will be lifted

Chinese authorities cannot confirm when the nationwide flying ban on the Boeing 737 8 MAX aircraft will be lifted, said Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Lu Kang, who spoke during a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

China joined a growing list of countries that have grounded their fleets of Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets on Monday, following the fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday - the second crash involving the model to have left no survivors. On Tuesday, Australia and Singapore also suspended all 737 MAX 8 planes coming in and out of their airspace.

Lu explained that a timeline for when the jets would be allowed to start flying again was difficult to predict, as the priority was passenger safety.

“We will inform the transport airlines to resume commercial operations of the 737-8 after we have confirmed the availability of effective flight safety measures. It is very difficult to prejudge the specific schedule. We need to make sure that there is no safety risk,” he said.

All 157 passengers aboard an Ethiopian Airlines plane were killed after it plunged into a field en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, just six minutes after take-off on Sunday. The disaster occurred less than half a year after the fatal Lion Air Flight 610, which killed 189 people and left no survivors.
