USA: EU Competition Chief Vestager jokes about EC presidency odds at SXSW

EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager joked about her odds of becoming president of the European Commission during a featured session at the South By Southwest Festival (SXSW) at the Austin Convention Centre, on Sunday, saying it would be 'a glitch in the system.'

"Yes, if a woman from a rather small member state could end up there. You know, there is a strong tradition for a man, 60-ish," said Vestager, prompting laughter and applause from the audience.

Vestager, from Denmark, also weighed in on different topics ranging from fair competition to privacy and responsibility in the digital world.

"I think we still have amazing things ahead of us. But we can only trust technology if we find that the dark side of technology is in check," said the commissioner.

"You're more than welcome to be successful in Europe if people like your product, the way you do things," she said. "You're also welcomed to be successful in that respect that you can have a merger with another company as long as there is someone to compete with you."

"If you grow yourself, because people like your product, maybe that's a European thing, but if you are big, you also have a special responsibility. And that's a responsibility not to do things that would make it impossible for others to compete against you," concluded Vestager.

The annual SXSW Festival, which showcases the best of film, music and interactive platforms, runs from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 17.
