USA: Protesters denounce lack of charges against Stephon Clark's police killers
Around 200 people gathered in Sacramento on Friday to protest against the district attorney's decision not to charge two police officers over their killing of 22-year old Stephon Clark last year.
Friday's protesters marched to the home of Clark's grandmother, before being led by Clark's brother into the backyard where he was killed. Protesters' chants included "Being black is not a crime" and "Hands up, don't shoot. Fists up, fight back."
On March 18, 2018 Clark was shot at least seven times in his grandmother's back garden by Sacramento Police Department officers Terrence Mercadal and Jared Robinet, who were responding to reports of a man breaking car windows. The officers say they believed that Clark was armed but found he was actually just holding a mobile phone.
On March 2, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that the officers who shot and killed Clark would not be charged because an investigation found they were not guilty of committing any crime.
On Monday, police arrested 84 protesters in East Sacramento after declaring the protest illegal because of alleged vandalism by protesters. On Friday, Schuber announced those arrested would not be charged.
