USA: Trump envoy sees no place for Maduro in Venezuela's future
US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams said it was "extremely difficult" to see a role for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in the building of a "democratic Venezuela", at a press meeting in the State Department on Tuesday.
Abrams said Maduro had presided over "human rights violations" and "economic decline".
The foreign policy veteran did say, however, that any decisions on the country would be left to Venezuelans.
Although, he reaffirmed the United States support for self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido to lead the democratic transition.
When asked about any military measures the US might be prepared to take, Abrams said, "The president always says all options are on the table because all options always are on the table and that's true in this case as well. But that is not the path that we choose to go down."
