Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that possible “military invasion of Venezuela will reveal the true aims of US policy in Latin America,” speaking during a press conference after talks with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez in Moscow on Friday.
Lavrov went on to say that there is “a cynical campaign” aimed at “toppling the legitimate government of Venezuela,” including by threats of “direct military intervention.”
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez explained President Maduro’s decision to relocate the PDVSA office from Lisbon to Moscow by the desire to increase “energy co-operation with Russia,” adding “if Europe cannot provide guarantees, then the capitalist world is violating its own laws, just as the UK and the Bank of England are doing now with Venezuelan gold."
Venezuela is currently in the midst of a tumultuous political crisis. It started at the beginning of the year, when lawmaker Juan Guaido was elected as president of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, which all other government branches have been refusing to recognise since 2016.
On January 23, Guaido declared himself the country's "interim president." Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called Guaido's move an attempt to stage a coup orchestrated by Washington.
