France: Article 50 extension requires ‘clear perspective’ from Britain – Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron said the Article 50 cannot be extended unless Britain has “a clear perspective on the pursued objective”, speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Paris on Wednesday.
"If the British need more time, we will be able to examine an extension request, if that is justified by new choices of the British", he said.
"We cannot in any case accept an extension without a clear perspective on the pursued objective. As our negotiator Michel Barnier said, 'we don't need time, above all we need decisions,'" Macron added.
Merkel's tone appeared to be softer, with German Chancellor saying: "If Britain needs more time, we surely won't refuse but we are striving for an orderly solution."
The German chancellor is holding a meeting with the French leader to discuss a range of issues, including Brexit, the transatlantic relations and the Aachen Treaty signed between the two countries last January.
