Colombia: Use of force 'not a solution' to Venezuela crisis - Peru's Hugo de Zela
Deputy Foreign Minister of Peru Hugo de Zela said the use of force in any form was not a solution to the Venezuela crisis. He made the remarks at a summit of Lima Group countries in Bogota on Monday.
"I believe I should say with the utmost clarity, that the use of force, in any of its forms, is unacceptable. The use of force is not a solution to what is happening in Venezuela. Here, in the Lima Group, we have been fighting for a peaceful solution," said de Zela.
"The international press has tried to generate a false dichotomy between those who support dialogue and [the others who do not]. Allegedly, it is being said that the members of the Lima Group are not supporting a dialogue. Somehow it is insinuated that we are defending the use of force. I want to say clearly that this is false. This simply is not happening," he stressed.
An emergency summit of the so-called Lima Group of countries has been called to discuss the Venezuela crisis. Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido and US Vice President Mike Pence are also among those present at the meeting, and have met each other.
