Italy: Sex abuse survivors criticise Pope in Rome at end of abuse summit

Clerical sexual abuse survivors and activists accused Pope Francis of not doing enough to tackle the issue, during a press conference in Rome's St. Peter Square at the end of a four-day conference on clerical sexual abuse in the Holy See.

"Our hope shifts back to civil authorities and they ultimately will clean up this Church because it appears that Pope Francis is unwilling to," said BishopAccountability.org co-director Anne Barrett Doyle.

Ending Clergy Abuse (ECA) Founding Member Peter Isely said Pope Francis "needs to stand up and say 'I'm gonna accuse myself, here's what I have done with this De Grassi case, here's what I have done with these deaf cases about priests with deaf children.'" "That's what he needs to do, he needs to show by example, he needs to show the rest of them this is how it's done," Isely added.

"All that we want are concrete answers and these answers are absolutely not there. By the way, the Pope asked to pray for him today, surely not for the victims, and this is quite explanatory of what is the attitude of the clergy towards this problem," sex abuse survivor and member of clerical abuse survivors network 'L'Abuso' Piero Broggi said.

On Sunday, Pope Francis called child abuses "heinous crimes that must be eradicated from the face of the Earth." He underlined that the Catholic Church needs a "change of mentality" to fight abuses of all kinds committed by the clergy.

The "Protection of Minors in the Church" Meeting ran from Thursday to Sunday and saw 190 Church leaders from around the world gathering at the Holy See for a summit on clerical sexual abuse called by Pope Francis.
