Moldova: Chisinau goes to the polls as elections kick off nationwide

Moldova, Republic of, Chisinau
February 24, 2019 at 13:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Moldovan parliamentary elections kicked off in Chisinau and other cities across the country, as shown in footage filmed on Sunday.

Moldovan citizens will elect members of the parliament and vote in a consultative referendum, in which they will be asked on the issues regarding a reduction in the number of the country's lawmakers and their possible recall in case of breaching their duty.

According to the Moldova's Central Election Committee, over 770,000 people had participated in the elections by 13:00 (11:00 GMT). Almost 40 percent of those who had voted were over 56 years old.

A total of 14 parties and one bloc will compete for seats in the 101-member parliament.

The main struggle is set to unfold between the ruling Party of Socialists, who are advocating closer cooperation with Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union, and the ruling Democratic Party and the opposition bloc ACUM, both of whom are supporting European integration.

One voter said that people have "no trust" in the current generation of politicians, while another said that she voted "for the future of her children and better life."

Polling stations opened at 07: 00 (05:00 GMT) and will close at 21:00 (18:00 GMT).

Over four thousand observers are watching the elections. Of these, 3,412 are local observers and 776 are international.
