Venezuela: National guard ready to block aid at Colombian border
Venezuelan National Guard (GNB) armed forces stationed themselves at the Venezuelan side of the Simon Bolivar International Bridge in San Antonio del Tachira on Saturday, allegedly to block US-backed humanitarian aid from crossing into the Venezuelan soil.
Footage shows Colombian civilians cheering and singing across the bridge while GNB officers monitor the situation.
"Our armed Bolivarian forces is operational and our people are moving to defend peace, to defend sovereignty and President Nicolas [Maduro]," said a Venezuelan officer.
At the request of opposition leader and self-declared interim president of Venezuela Juan Guaido, the aid brought by US military planes has been stockpiled in the border town of Cucuta and is expected to be carried across the border by a number of Venezuelan volunteers.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has stated that the aid is nothing but a US plot to disguise an intervention in Venezuela. It is uncertain if the aid will be allowed to cross the border.
