Colombia: Venezuelan police block bridge ahead of attempt to bring aid over border
Demonstrators faced off with Venezuelan riot police on the Colombian side of the Simon Bolivar International Bridge, ahead of an attempt to bring US-backed humanitarian aid across the border on Saturday.
People sang the Venezuelan national anthem and waved the country's flag in front of the police, while crowds were also visible on the Venezuelan side of the bridge.
At the request of opposition leader and self-declared interim president of Venezuela Juan Guaido, the aid brought by US military planes has been stockpiled in the border town of Cucuta and is expected to be carried across the border by a number of Venezuelan volunteers.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has stated that the aid is nothing but a US plot to disguise an intervention in Venezuela. It is uncertain if the aid will be allowed to cross the border.
